CLUB TALK OFF THE MENU AT ENGLAND

Last updated : 15 April 2007 By Editor

"I find it hard to talk to people I am against in football. When we go away with England, I might talk to Frank about other stuff, but I would never talk to him about what we are doing at United or ask him what Chelsea are doing. It just doesn't work like that.

"I think there is a mutual respect between players from rival clubs and we just let our football do the talking, rather than having a wind-up with each other."

Referring to CL semi-final experience with Leeds:

"I said to Smudger, 'we're back in the semi-final, let's make sure that we don't have a repeat of the last time we were there.' I remember the time and place of the second leg, every minute of the game, almost every kick and, most importantly, how I felt at the end. It's not a feeling I want to ever have again."

And on the Roma game:

"At times, it was kind of breathtaking and it is difficult to say who was the star player.

"Giggsy was unbelievable, Cristiano was unplayable, Wazza [Wayne Rooney] was great, so was Darren Fletcher and the amount of running Smudger did for someone who hadn't played for so long was incredible. It was just another step in the right direction for Cristiano and Wazza. They're gaining experience every season and you can see the difference in their displays and their maturity even from last season.

"They are both players who can hang on to the ball for long periods, which gives us a chance for a breather at the back."
