Confusion as new 29-year-old striker appears in Man Utd squad

Fans of Manchester United have been treated to some wonderful forwards in the Premier League era alone. Wayne Rooney. Cristiano Ronaldo. Eric Cantona. Betinho.

Wait...Betinho?

If you have never heard of Betinho you might be forgiven. Yet the Portuguese forward randomly appeared as part of the United squad with the number 11 shirt on the official Premier League website and app ahead of the post-Christmas clash with Nottingham Forest on 27 December.

Betinho is a real player. But rather than a kid promoted from the academy, he is actually 29. The date of birth listed by the Premier League is the same as that for a journeyman striker that Google suggests is really at S.C Espinho in Portugal's lower leagues.

To further add to the confusion, this Betinho has supposedly been at Old Trafford since 2019. Obviously all his appearances, goals and other stats read zero.

The closest Betinho has genuinely got to English football was a loan spell at Brentford that extended to a solitary Championship appearance in 2014.

United are in the market for a new forward in January, despite allowing Liverpool to beat them to the punch for long-term target Cody Gakpo. 90min understands the Old Trafford club are among three Premier League clubs to have held talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential Joao Felix loan.
