CREWE REACTIONS

"The confidence is building now. Winning games lifts you. There is no question about that. Nobody is unbreakable and things are going along the right lines.

"It was always going to be difficult. We were at their ground, the fans got them going and they were always going to be getting at us but we seemed to control it very well and we started playing our game and eventually we got through.

"It was very pleasing. John O'Shea was feeling a groin injury so Gerard Pique was able to come on and get his first game and Sylvan Blake came on before the end.

"Both of them, particularly Pique, were excellent. He played for more than half and hour and I was very pleased with him. He is a very good young player.

"Young Blake showed enough to tell us that he is a player with some promise. It is terrific to play in games like this for a young player.”

Wes Brown:

"It was great to be captain and to get a win. We hadn't really played together and there were a few players playing in different positions as well so it was a good display. I think the lads did tremendously well and to come out with three goals all in all it was a good night out.

"I think that is always the case. The gaffer likes bringing the young players in but the further you go the more of a competition it is.

"We would like to keep going and to win the competition as well. It was a completely different 11 that we played on Sunday but it was still a great side.

"I think we have a great squad at the moment and we just need to keep on going in the cups and in the Premiership."

Dario Gradi:

"I do not think we were disgraced. We made their keeper work as hard as ours. Alan Smith was the outstanding player on the pitch. He caused us all sorts of problems.

"It appears Sir Alex got his team selection just right."
