Cristiano Ronaldo dropped by Portugal for World Cup clash with Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo has been dropped by Portugal for their World Cup round of 16 clash with Switzerland.

The 37-year-old has featured from the off in all three of the Selecao's matches so far this tournament, but has only scored once - a penalty in their 3-2 win against Ghana on the opening round of group stage fixtures.

He had a potential goal against Uruguay awarded to Bruno Fernandes instead after adidas technology revealed he did not make contact with the ball, while he was at fault for South Korea's equaliser in a 2-1 loss last week.

Ronaldo was substituted during that defeat and manager Fernando Santos revealed earlier in the week that he was unhappy with the forward's petulant reaction.

"Have I seen the images when Ronaldo was subbed? Yes. Did I not like what I saw? No, I didn't like it one bit," Santos told the media. "There matters are to be resolved behind closed doors. It's resolved. Full stop on this matter, and full focus on tomorrow's match."

Confirmation of Ronaldo's axing from the starting lineup has now been confirmed, with Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos handed a surprise start ahead of AC Milan star Rafael Leao.

Ronaldo is one goal away from tying Eusebio's record of nine goals scored in World Cup finals.
