Cristiano Ronaldo to be dropped for Portugal's World Cup clash with Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to start Portugal's World Cup last 16 tie with Switzerland on the bench.

The 37-year-old has featured from the off in all three of the Selecao's matches so far this tournament, but has only scored once - a penalty in their 3-2 win against Ghana on the opening round of group stage fixtures.

He had a potential goal against Uruguay awarded to Bruno Fernandes instead after adidas technology revealed he did not make contact with the ball, while he was at fault for South Korea's equaliser in a 2-1 loss last week.

Ronaldo was substituted during that defeat and manager Fernando Santos revealed he was unhappy with the forward's petulant reaction.

Portuguese outlet Record now report that Ronaldo will not start against Switzerland on Tuesday evening. He is set to be replaced in the starting lineup by Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos.

Ronaldo is one goal away from tying Eusebio's record of nine goals scored in World Cup finals.
