Cristiano Ronaldo's Man Utd shirt number confirmed

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed the famous number seven shirt after sealing his return to Manchester United.

The seven had been owned by Edinson Cavani, who wore the number when he made his first appearance of the season last time out against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

United took to their official website to confirm that Cavani had volunteered to give the number up and hand Ronaldo the number 7 shirt that he helped make famous.

As for Cavani, he has swapped to the same 21 that he wears on the international stage for Uruguay.

George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham all wore the 7 shirt before Ronaldo, who took it when he arrived in 2003 and helped add to its legacy at Old Trafford.

With seven on his back, Ronaldo bagged 118 goals in 292 appearances for the Red Devils.

However, since he left in 2009, the seven shirt has almost become somewhat of a curse at Old Trafford. Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia wore it in the years immediately following Ronaldo's exit, before it went to Angel Di Maria in 2014.

Di Maria, who lasted just one year at United, recently claimed he 'didn't give a s**t' about the number, despite the fact he has it tattooed on his arm.

Following the Argentine's exit, it was Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez who failed to live up to the seven's reputation, before Cavani gave it a good-enough go.

Cavani fired home 17 goals in 39 appearances in his debut year at Old Trafford, but fans will be hoping that the seven shirt sees even more goals over the next few years.
