Presidential favourite Lluis Bassat, who has seen his lead in the polls whittled away since Laporta's Beckham announcement, said he wanted to see proof that the Catalan lawyer could deliver on his promise.

"You have to show the contract with Beckham or otherwise you must stop talking about it, because it is a trick for the supporters," he said.

Laporta countered, saying he had a made a deal with Manchester United, but had not had contact with Beckham's representatives.

"It is not a trick, I only have an agreement with Manchester United and not the player," he said.

"If he does not agree with me then he does not come, but I want to convince him because we need him, the club, the city and Spain."

Jaume Llaurado claimed that a deal exists between Beckham and Real Madrid. "On the 12th May Beckham has an agreement with Real Madrid," he said.

"I can bring in (Christian) Vieri, (Cristian) Chivu and a player from Real Madrid who will have the same impact as when Real Madrid bought (Luis) Figo."

Bassat added that the whole election was not dependent on Beckham, insisting his desired coach, Ronald Koeman, would prefer to sign other players.

"I think that Koeman believes that even if Beckham is the best player for his position he would prefer to buy three or four good players," Bassat said.

It is now down to the voters to decide the future of the famous Catalan club.
