David de Gea has bemoaned Manchester United's five year spell without winning any silverware, stating that the club are in a 'difficult situation' at the moment.
The goalkeeper was beaten by a Renan Lodi header in the first half of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford, and that goal proved to be decisive as his former club were able to hold on for a 2-1 aggregate win.
The result means that United are now out of every cup competition and, without any realistic hope of winning the Premier League, are set to complete five years without winning a single trophy.
When asked about barren spell De Gea told BT Sport, "Of course [it's not good enough]. It's hard for the club, for us, for the fans - it's really hard. This is where we are at the moment, it's a difficult situation, but we need to keep fighting and trying our best."
He added, "To be honest, it's tough moment again. I feel sad for the fans and for everyone, but we are not good enough."
De Gea also discussed the game itself, and the tactics deployed by Atleti to seal the win.
"We are really disappointed with the result. It's difficult to describe how we feel right now. We didn't do enough in both games to win the tie. We were not at our best to be honest - it's a very disappointing day for us," he said.
"They are a team with a lot of experience and they know how to play these tight games. They scored and they're a very defensive team so it was very difficult for us to create chances. Now we're out of one of the most important competitions so we are really, really sad.
"As soon as they scored the goal they put their whole team in front of [Jan] Oblak. Ten defensive players makes it really difficult to score, but we tried - we tried until the end but it wasn't enough."
