Defender In Race Against Time

The Northern Ireland international defender aggravated an ankle injury, which had previously kept him sidelined for three weeks, during the 2-1 home success against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday evening.

Evans looked the most likely replacement for fellow centre-back Nemanja Vidic for the game against Jose Mourinho's side at The San Siro on Tuesday night - the Serbian defender is suspended for the tie having been handed a one match ban for his sending off in the Club World Cup Final in December.

''It is a recurrence of the ankle injury I had before and is a bit tender,'' Evans has said.

''I caught it when I kicked the ground during the game.

''At this point, I don't know whether I will be fit for the San Siro.

"The doctor has said that he will have a look at it so we will have a better picture then.''
