Gary Neville says that for the first time he really thought England were going to
win a major tournament. He said:

"Every morning before the Euro 2004 tournament and even during it, I woke up thinking we were going to win it."

"At Euro 2000, I didn't expect to win the tournament. You don't say that
beforehand but there were teams that were quite clearly better than us.

"However, I genuinely believed at Euro 2004 that four or five teams were much of a muchness. I was expecting to come away with a winner's medal, I think
everyone was.

"We shouldn't forget that, for the first time in a long time, we went to a
tournament genuinely optimistic we had a chance.

"But from the top of the mountain, you fall down to the bottom and have to start again. You have to wait two more years to put it right."

Two more years? Come on Gary, even you must admit that's optimistic.
