Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has spoken about one of his former players, Jadon Sancho, and his struggles since joining new club Manchester United - admitting it 'hurts [his] soul' to see him struggling for game time.
Sancho arrived at United from Dortmund in the summer for £73m, after a very public transfer chase which lasted the better part of two years.
Dortmund, and Watzke, turned down offers from United in the summer of 2020 and held out for in the region of £108m, but eventually agreed to sell the England international the following year. Sancho completed his move after England's European Championship campaign.
But the 21-year-old has found the adjustment to life at Old Trafford difficult so far, failing to establish a regular place in the team for himself. He is also without a goal or assist for his new club to date - and it's quite a difference from how regularly he managed to contribute at his former club. Sancho left the club with 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances to his name.
And Watzke told Sport1 at the weekend of his thoughts on why Sancho was struggling.
"I love Jadon," he said. "When you see him playing you get tears in your eyes. It hurts my soul that he is given so little consideration. I think his problem is that he’s not set in the English national team."
Sancho was an unused substitute for Saturday's home defeat to Aston Villa, and failed to make an impact during his last appearance in the League Cup against West Ham - which was another home defeat.
