Edinson Cavani 'ready' to play 30 minutes in Manchester derby

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Edinson Cavani is ready to come off the bench during Sunday's Manchester derby.

Cavani is back in training after missing his side's last five games with a groin injury. Rangnick hinted that he could feature in his pre-match press conference and, speaking to the official club's website, he has since revealed how many minutes the forward can be expected to manage.

"Well it’s good to have him back," the German said. "We have one more alternative in a central attacking position but he has been out for three weeks.

"That’s also something we have to bear in mind. I don’t think he could play for more than, I don’t know, half an hour. He’s ready for that, for coming on as a sub but I don’t think he can be in contention to start that game."

Cavani has endured a frustrating campaign so far, with injuries restricting him to just 11 appearances in the Premier League. Last season he ended proceedings at United's starting striker, though that spot has since been taken by Cristiano Ronaldo – who has scored just once in 2022.

Rangnick also provided a further update on the availability of Scott McTominay whose involvement in the derby had been in doubt due to illness.

"[It’s] Important to have him available," he added. "He’s been training the whole week. He’s been out one week only but he was really seriously ill and lost some weight. I think he could be in contention for the starting XI but I will decide on that [on Saturday] after the last training session."
