EDWIN IS UNHAPPY

Edwin van der Sar is quite pleased with the start to his United career but just the one goal he has conceded so far is not a happy memory.

“Overall, six clean sheets in seven matches is a good record but I am still not happy with the one we conceded against Manchester City,” he said.

“I made a save but they still scored from the rebound, so that was disappointing. On balance though, we have to be reasonably pleased.

“We didn’t play well in the first half last night and when Wayne was sent off we had to change our tactics.

“But the defenders stuck at it and we managed to keep another clean sheet. If we can be tight at the back, our attacking players can usually guarantee us a goal, which will give us a big chance in Europe.”

However Sir Alex Ferguson is very happy with Van Der Sar's form to date.

“We have a reassuring presence behind our back four, which is an important factor in the form of our defence,” said Ferguson.

“I do think there are other aspects too because our defenders have decent experience and are moving towards the type of age when they start to show it.

“But Edwin is making a major contribution too. He has done excellently since he came to us. In many ways, the move gave him a lift too.

“He is back in European football now, which is a good thing. He loves the challenge and hopefully he can enjoy the same success he had with Ajax.”
