He told Sky: 'We had chances and maybe should have converted them. A 1-0 is a 1-0 at the end of the day and it's three points. We kept the ball in the second half and did not penetrate as much as we would like.

'In the end we did not get the breaks in front of goal that we would have liked.'

He continued: 'We played in the Champions League qualifier and eventually broke down West Brom and did the same today. You have got to learn to break teams down, pass the ball and have a lot of movement.

'Against Chelsea [away] I thought we were brilliant, in the second half especially. That was us at are best.'

Ferdinand’s French has obviously improved since the World Cup as he says that he is getting on fine with Larry

'He talks his way through the game and you can learn a lot from him - and from all the other players we have here too.'

Rio added that he is happier as a red than as a visitor:

'It is an intimidating place to come when you are an away player. It is nice to have them [the crowd] on your side.

'To be here on the home team was excellent and the fans were excellent to me.'
