United have agreed an initial £3.5million fee for the Douala-born player, with a further £700,000 payable once he has made a set number of appearances. The 23 year old signs on a five year contract.

Fergie:

'In the last few months he has shown his development playing in a very good Cameroon team, and he looks like a Manchester United player in every sense

'Eric is a young player we've watched throughout the season, and he's impressed us each time with his understanding of the game.

'He's quick, aggressive and a good passer of the ball, and is the kind of athletic footballer we are looking for.

Eric on himself:

This is a very proud moment for me. Ever since I was a teenager it has been my dream to play for Manchester United.' Djemba-Djemba said.

'If the club is signing me it is because they really believe in me. I am here to learn and to work hard, and I cannot wait for the new season to start.

"I am quite physical but I'm sure a lot of the yellow cards I got last season would have gone un-noticed in England. It's much easier to get booked in France because they don't get stuck in like they do in England.''
