ERIKSSON

From The NOTW:

The meetings were always held in hotels, with the Football Association unaware of what was going on.

The last meeting was in February when the England boss was offered a five year contract worth around £15m by Kenyon. The Swede then spent 24 hours agonising over whether to accept, seeking advice from close friends and colleagues who warned him he would face a public backlash if he walked out on England.

A Swedish source confided: "The talks were at a very advanced stage, so advanced that he was offered the job." Eriksson wasn't represented by an agent during his meetings with Kenyon, and our source added: "Sven was happy with United's offer but was worried it would look very bad if he did a deal before the World Cup.

"He sought advice from the people closest to him and they all told him it would be a public relations disaster.

"That's why, after a lot of agonising, he said no."
