Real Madrid scored three times for the third league match in a row to overcome Mallorca at the Bernabéu 3-1. Barcelona also scored three against Racing Santander to remain seven points clear at the top. Real's win lifts them to 38 points, two above Valencia who lost 3-1 at Villarreal where for once Diego Forlan failed to score.

In Serie A newly promoted Livorno served up a bit of a shock as they defeated AC Milan 1-0. Livorno had held Milan to a 2-2 draw at the San Siro earlier in the season and this weekend's victory prompted Livorno's captain Cristiano Lucarelli to take his team on a lap of honour around the ground at the end of the game. Milan's second league defeat of the of the season came after Jaap Stam gave away a free kick on the edge of the box. Milan keeper Dida palmed away a header from Vidigal but he could not stop Corrado Colombo firing in the rebound.
