EVENING NEWS REPORT ON MEC PROTEST

Any proposed takeover of Manchester United will meet with increased opposition after fans took their objections to a new level on Thursday night by invading the pitch at a reserve match.

‘And it will not just be American businessman and owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL team Malcolm Glazer - the man believed to be ready to make a bid for the richest club in the world - who will be in their sights.

‘The vociferous group of supporters are ready to turn their anger to club sponsors and commercial partners in a campaign which could have far-reaching implications for the Old Trafford outfit.

‘Not content with opposing a move off the field, fans disrupted United's reserve match against Birmingham at Altrincham's Moss Lane ground. Half an hour into the match 30 protesters unveiled a banner declaring 'Not For Sale' and paraded it the length of the field.

‘The game was restarted but the message was plain for everyone - the match was broadcast live on United's television station MUTV - to see. The fans are not to be under-estimated.

‘And if their actions were not enough, the group - known as the Manchester Education Committee - backed them up with strong words.’
