FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said:"We don’t want to get involved in a war of words on this matter.

"But no deal has been cut, and we believe our disciplinary processes are of the highest integrity. We will be looking very closely at Alex Ferguson’s comments."

"I want to emphasise that we do not involve ourselves with any deals with any club. Furthermore, the suggestions that we hung Rio Ferdinand out to dry is also something that we refute very strongly."

"We are not going to get involved in a knee-jerk reaction but, quite clearly, we need to look very closely at his comments. We will go through our normal disciplinary procedures."

Paddy Harverson starts the damage limitation exercise:

"It’s just a bit of fun and games. He (Fergie) is not making serious accusations about anyone."
