FA CUP SCARE STORY

‘Security for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Everton has been placed on red alert amid fears that thousands of Manchester United fans have infiltrated the home support.

‘Extra police and stewards have already been drafted in for the potentially explosive first return of Wayne Rooney to his former club. But now that security has been put on heightened alert after United fans were made aware they could bypass usual restrictions to purchase seats normally reserved for home supporters.

‘United have already sold their allocation of 6,000 tickets but 14,000 seats were put on general sale. The majority of those were snapped up by club members at Goodison but around 5,000 were made available through Ticketmaster.’

Everton secretary David Harrison, however, has played down the problem. He is quoted in the Echo as saying:

"This is the way we always sell our tickets and have done so when Manchester United have been playing here for the last 10 years.

"We are hearing the same thing, that there are thousands of tickets in wrong hands. That is nonsense. Everyone who buys a ticket is told that if they are in the wrong areas then they will be ejected."
