FC UNITED - MATCH REPORT AND QUOTES

Last updated : 17 July 2005 By Ed

There was an attendance of 2552, most of them FC United fans.

United's first chance came on 13 minutes when Rob Nugent headed just over from a cracking cross from Craig Fleury.

Leigh's first chance came on the 25th minute when Chris McDonagh brought a fine save out of Barrie George.

United's keeper saved 10 minutes later when he raced out to save from McDonagh again in a one-on-one.

McDonagh should have scored again just before half-time - but fired wide.

Wholesale changes were made for the second half - and much-travelled front man Steve Torpey almost broke the deadlock for the Reds - but at the other end Liam Coyne and Chris Simm saw shots cleared off the line.

All in all a good result for United.

Manager Karl Marginson:

"The goalkeeper (Barrie George) had a decent game. I didn’t know much about him, but he impressed me and has come on really well.

"Steve Torpey up front did well and Jonathan (Mitten) showed himself in the
first half.

"I thought the whole team gave a good account of themselves. For them to go out and perform in front of all those people was superb.

"There were a few little mistakes, but I think that was more a case of fitness. Hopefully, they will be ironed out by the start of the season.

"I haven’t chosen the striking partnership that will start the season.

"It may well be that we will bring in another striker. But anyone who gets a run out in the friendlies will have to prove that they are good enough to
hold on to their shirts in time for 13 August.

"The support was absolutely fantastic today - it's hard to put it into words.

"For them to come on to the pitch at the end of the game and lift the players off the pitch as they did just shows how much it means to them. We hope to give something back to them on the pitch.

"There were a few little mistakes here and there, but we genuinely believe there is a long-term future at this club.

"However, there will be no complacency on the part of my players once the league season gets under way."

Player coach Phil Power:

"It was fantastic for me to get a run out. I kept nudging him (Karl Marginson) to get him to give me 10 minutes so I was very pleased to get 20
minutes.

"It was a big buzz to be out there and even for a player like me in my 40s, getting that kind of a crowd behind you always gives you an extra yard start
on the pitch.

"I wish I had some of the pace that the young lads do, but they will do a job for us this year."

Striker Jonathan Mitten:

"It was brilliant to be able to play in front of a crowd that big. All the players got a big buzz from it.

"I used to have a season ticket at Old Trafford and stopped going when I couldn’t sit with my mates.

"I think a certain number of fans will support both teams though we will have to wait until the season starts."

FC United Spokesman Jules Spencer:

"We want this to be bigger than an antidote to Malcolm Glazer.

"We are determined for this club to grow and grow and grow, we are creating something positive here.

"The fans can now say that this is our team."
