FERGIE – WHY I PLAYED RONALDO

Last updated : 09 December 2004 By editorq

"One of the reasons we (brought) Ronaldo and Fletcher is for them to be part of the young squad we have now. We should always remember they are still young boys. Bringing the other young players into the squad creates a unity that they can grow up with.

"We don't want them to be separated into youth team, reserve team, first team. On Wednesday night they are Manchester United first team players - all of them.

"It's very difficult to assess how a group of young players are going to mature together. But the one thing I am certain about is they have fantastic potential. Hopefully in three or four years time that will be proved correct.

"The boy has fantastic potential. He is a player that plays with great courage. The first thing he thinks about is to attack defenders. We are very pleased with the progress he is making. There will be a time when I give him a rest. We're still trying to decide when is the best time.

"December is a very busy month for us. Unless I play these (young) players now, they won't have any match experience for when I really need to play them.”
