In an interview with ESPN soccernet United's number two points out that the first team is very young. He also went some way to explaining why these players struggled to get a result in Lille.

'The Chelsea game does prove that we have the ability; there is no question about that.

'It's a Manchester United day when Old Trafford is like that - an absolutely rocking atmosphere where the volume can overcome anyone. The team and the fans were fantastic.

'We were absolutely superb, Chelsea recognized that. When you play the champions they expect us to try and do something about it.

'We missed important chances just after half-time where we could have sealed it and had a nice easy afternoon for ourselves but that is not Manchester United's way, we all have to suffer at this club, you know.

'At the moment we are doing the job with a very, very young squad.

'If you take the Lille game, we were playing Wes Brown for his first game in four months and because of that I had to try and balance the back four because I could not risk him at right back in his first game after being out so long. So, I switched the back four and put in Silvestre to give us more energy and the rest of the team is young players.

'Smith is 24, the centre midfielder, Fletcher, Kieran Richardson, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo. Wes Brown playing his first game with John O'Shea who is 23. You are asked to operate at the very highest level in a European tie and to win the matches with all your experienced players sitting in the stand.'

Looking ahead to Villarreal Fergie called on the fans to lay their part in getting a result.

'Our performance is going to be important but the fans are always going to help us in that respect,' he continued. 'We need them on a European night to help us, and Villarreal are a very good team. We have to win the match, our home record is excellent over the years in the group stages. And it has to be on this night.

'They will try and keep it as tight as they can - so will we by the way - but we will still have the attacking impetus. Obviously, we will have to be aware of the dangers of Riquelme and Diego, so we can identify the strengths of their team quite clearly. And we know what job we have to do in that respect.'
