"There are some tough matches coming up for us but the way we are playing it doesn't really matter who our opponents are.

"There is a lot of confidence in our team at the moment and there has been a lot of improvement from our younger players, which is encouraging.

"If we are going to win championships, we need consistency. The one thing you cannot give young players is experience but the signs are very good.

"A five-point gap wouldn't be a decisive, but it would be important. It'd be a nice cushion because we've got some big games coming up. We've got to go to Bolton, Tottenham and Chelsea before the end of the season - thee massive away matches, But I don't think it matters who we play, because we're playing with such authority at the moment.

"The team is in great form. There is good improvement in the younger members of the side as well. Having a settled midfield really has helped. Ryan Giggs' experience and composure has helped the team. The balance to the centre of midfield John O'Shea has brought with him has also been good. But the most important thing is the electricity we have up front. That's terrific. Ronaldo has been brilliant, Rooney and Saha have been marvellous.

"We have great options and that means we are a great threat. The players are improving all the time. The one thing we can't give them is experience, we can't give them old heads – only playing gives them that. But the signs are good. We're pleased with the speed and movement in the team.

"We've got a couple of other injuries from the Birmingham game on Sunday. We hope we can repair them in time for Wednesday's game. But we've had to add a few younger players into the squad; Rossi and Pique are there, also included are [Markus] Neumayr, Richard Jones and Darron Gibson. We'll have a better idea on Wednesday, but hopefully I can play a side good enough to win."
