"I have spoken with him three or four times already. He stressed how
important it was for me to pace myself in the first half against Argentina. It was
pretty good advice - and a bit surprising seeing it came from a Scot," said
Beckham.
"He said he had seen how tired I had been after the opening 45 minutes
against Sweden and that it was vital not to blow myself out against Argentina.
"He said that was the only way I would be able to make sure I lasted the
whole game."
"The boss rang the night before the Argentina game and then not long
afterwards. He said how delighted he was for me and then I put him on to
both Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt. He was thrilled for them as well - especially
Butty. Of course, we get all sorts of advice and encouragement from loads
of different people. But when someone like the boss takes the time to give you
the benefit of his opinion, it means more than anything else."
