has slapped in an £8million offer for Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes.But the Manchester United manager faces competition from Italian side Roma, who have made the same bid for the France international.
Mexes, 24, has been linked with United for months but now the Old Trafford club have made an official approach.
United will offer Mexes a four-year deal worth around £30,000 a week.
