'In his autobiography, Managing My Life, Ferguson describes an incident that took place in 1976 when he was a recently-retired player who had taken over the management of Scottish team St Mirren.

During a tour game in Guyana, Ferguson saw that his young centre forward, Robert Torrance, was being roughed up by the opposition centre half and the referee was failing to protect him. After yet another scything tackle went unpunished, Ferguson put himself on as a substitute.

"In the first contest for a cross, I exacted a bit of revenge on the centre half, whose squeals caused the referee to point at me ominously," he wrote. "The competition became fierce until I nailed Torrance's abuser perfectly. As he rolled about like a dying man, the referee sent me off."
