FERGIE POST MATCH

"That was Cristiano Ronaldo's best game of the season and he could have had two or three goals," said Ferguson. "I thought he was absolutely outstanding."

"It was good to for him to get another goal following the one he got on Wednesday," he said. "He's going for that target of ten goals, and maybe he will get them. He could maybe have had two or three, but the goal he did get was an important one. He also had a fantastic shot which allowed Paul Scholes to score our third goal. I'm pleased for him."

With strikers in short supply at the moment Ferguson did not forget the contribution of Louis Saha:

"He was absolutely terrific and he is going to get better all the time. He's needing games, obviously, but there are some important matches coming up."

"Villa lost 3-0 at Middlesbrough but that result was a travesty and they dominated much of the game with Chelsea but still lost."

"It is unusual for us to get an early goal and their equaliser was a shock but Ronaldo was always a threat and it was his shot which set up our third goal."

"There is a terrific team spirit here and we hope to keep it up. I expected Chelsea to win but all we can do is keep winning and keep the pressure on them."

After navigating his way through a mini-injury crisis the squad is nearing full strength and Ferguson is looking forward to Wednesday night.

"Hopefully Alan Smith will be ready for Wednesday that will start to give us that strength up front. We'll just have to wait. Darren Fletcher has picked up an injury, so that will probably rule him out. We will have a look at our resources. Roy Keane misses the Middlesbrough FA Cup game after getting a booking today. That is a blow for us. But I'm pleased with the result and at times our football was good. The players found it difficult with the pitch and we may need to look into that because we are getting to an important stage of the season and we need a good surface."
