"Obviously, there was a big U-turn that has been well documented and it only came about because of the intervention of my wife (Cathy) and sons who made me stay on," said Ferguson after confirming his new contract.

"I was worrying about what I was going to do, but I couldn't see myself riding into the sunset - not just yet.

"As my wife Cathy says, 'retire when you're tired' I think it's a good point that. However, at the end of the day I feel strong, I feel young and I feel fit.

"Hopefully my health maintains and I can go on and enjoy the next few years because after the success of the previous years I do think we can get better.

"There is a great future for Manchester United.

"I think that there are some areas to address and make improvements but I think we can get encouragement because we still have a vibrant youth system and we have a fantastic medical and coaching staff in place.

"That's always exciting for me and that's where I see we can make ground up on our present position because I think we can get better."

Under Ferguson United have netted sixteen trophies, that number looks set to rise even further by the thime he completes his fourteen year reign in three years time.
