Important Win

"Derby games never change; they can be dull and scrappy, but the best thing you can do is win them. Unusually some of the City people in the tunnel apologised for the referee after the match as they thought he gave them everything and I probably thought that too.

"But you have to handle these things and most importantly make sure you win the game."

Performance Wasn't Our Best
"The performance levels we've reached over the last few weeks have been excellent but I don't think it was our best performance today. We were a bit indecisive in our passing particularly in the first half and I don't think we played with enough speed.

"Nevertheless, that part of our game improved tremendously with the introduction of Ronaldo and Giggs and I think we were deserved winners in the end."

Praise For Rooney
"He's been fantastic and is getting better all the time. Great players have the ability to raise their game when it really matters and he did that again today.

"He and Ronaldo have got wonderful confidence and belief in themselves and they're both going to be great players."

Just Keep Winning
"I hate to repeat myself but we're not doing much wrong at the moment. There's no doubt Chelsea are getting the breaks such as the sending-off yesterday [of James Beattie for Everton] - I couldn't believe that. It could have been a kick in the teeth for us but we gathered ourselves quite well today.

"You never know what will happen. I keep saying Chelsea are not playing well but they keep getting the results and sometimes that's all that matters."
