FEUD GLORIOUS FEUD

Arsene Wenger:

"I love football; I respect Manchester Utd and I respect the referees - and I don't have any malicious ideas before games. I just feel that on the day Manchester United did not play with the spirit I like football to be played.

"We go there to play football as well as we can and we know we play against a good side. But English football lost an opportunity to show how big football is in this country, and on the day the spirit was not right.

"I cannot agree, despite the result, with the way they approached the game.

"I love physical commitment and people who go for the ball - but I cannot believe that Manchester United goes into the game thinking that. If they do I'm even more disappointed.

"I don't want to speak about the referee getting decisions wrong. But I think the spirit of the game was not right from the first minute and I cannot accept that when (Jose) Reyes gets kicked off the pitch the referee accepts it.

"At half-time we thought Reyes would not be able to run out any more, Ashley Cole as well. He will be out for the whole week's training."

Ruud van Nistelrooy apologised yesterday for the challenge on Ashley Cole saying:

"There was no deliberate intent to harm Ashley Cole and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to him.

"Throughout my 10-year career I believe my disciplinary record is very good, not only for Manchester United but at all my previous clubs.

"I accept the charge made by the FA and I take full responsibility for this incident."

However Wenger won’t let it go:

"Van Nistelrooy is a big enough player just to come and play football. I have no preconceived ideas about him but what is he doing carrying out such silly things.

"If you look at the video again it wasn't just the challenge on Ashley Cole, he also steps on Jens Lehmann in the second half and it's clearly on purpose. He does it like he is always innocent. Who is he trying to impress by doing that.

"Why can't he just play football and forget all the rest."

The Sun reports on the tunnel bust ups:

‘Ashley Cole tried to dish up revenge for being fouled by Ruud van Nistelrooy — only for a pizza he lobbed to hit Sir Alex Ferguson.

‘Arsenal defender Cole, 23, grabbed the slice from a dressing room during a bust-up between fuming team-mates and Manchester United players.

‘He hurled it at striker van Nistelrooy, 28 — who was yesterday hit by the FA with a three-match ban for his vicious foul on Cole during Sunday’s 2-0 victory by United.

‘Fergie, 62, got in the way and had to change out of his splattered suit for a TV interview.

‘Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, 55, blew his top at Fergie in the players’ tunnel and branded Ruud a cheat.

‘But The Sun can reveal that moments after the pizza was thrown Fergie considered calling police as a SECOND bust-up erupted.

‘Arsenal’s Thierry Henry acted as peacemaker as French-speaking players squared up. Old Trafford security guards stepped in — one suffering a cut face.

‘A United source said: “Sir Alex thought about ringing the police but then decided against it. The whole scene was mad.”’

The London Evening Standard reports on an attempt to broker peace between the clubs:

Directors at Arsenal and Manchester United are considering calling a peace summit to bring an end to the damaging feud between the two clubs.

‘According to senior sources at Highbury and Old Trafford, moves are under way to arrange a meeting at boardroom level to prevent a repeat of the scenes which marred Sunday's Premiership clash.

‘Despite the animosity between the players and coaching staff, relations between directors at boardroom level are said to be very good. United chief executive David Gill and Arsenal vice-chairman David Gill are both members of the FA Council and regularly meet at Premiership shareholders meetings and G14 summits.

‘According to a United source, the club would not publicise a meeting between the two sides to discuss the issue. But he acknowledged an informal conversation was a distinct possibility.’
