Six former United legends will be inducted into the The National Football Museum Hall of Fame at a star-studded Charity Dinner on 1 December 2002.

George Best, Eric Cantona, Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Denis Law and Bryan Robson will all be included in the museum's first honour roll, alongside other household names from other clubs. Managers Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson are set to join the players in the Hall of Fame.

Sir Bobby announced the names, saying, "I'm really proud to be included in The National Football Museum's Hall of Fame."

"It's a great honour. If you look at the names included I have to say I couldn't argue with them.

They are all great players and people I would love to have played with. And I think it's great that the Museum has secured the Hall of Fame for the benefit of future generations of both footballers and supporters."

Mark Bushell from the Museum said: "We believe that a football 'Hall of Fame' is long overdue.

Every year we lose great footballing characters such as Sir Stanley Matthews and Bobby Moore and it seems such a shame that their services to the game are not recognised during their lifetime."

Bushell went on rather optimistically "This will become an annual event, as eagerly awaited, much debated and exciting as the Oscars,"

This is the full list of inductee players:
Gordon Banks, George Best, Eric Cantona, John Charles, Bobby Charlton, Kenny Dalglish, Dixie Dean, Peter Doherty, Duncan Edwards, Tom Finney, Paul Gascoigne, Jimmy Greaves, Johnny Haynes, Kevin Keegan, Denis Law, Nat Lofthouse, Dave Mackay, Stanley Matthews, Bobby Moore, Bryan Robson, Peter Shilton, Billy Wright.
