Gary Neville reacts to Man Utd sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has commented on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking by the Red Devils on Sunday morning, admitting that the dismissal had been coming for a number of weeks.

Solskjaer has relieved of his duties at Old Trafford after string of embarrassing results and performances this season - most recently in a 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.

Michael Carrick is set to take charge of the club on an interim basis until a new manager is found - with Brendan Rodgers currently being the frontrunner for the role.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the news, Neville said: "It had been coming for the past few weeks, the performances have been terrible and the results have been shocking.

"Yesterday was a whimpish performance at Watford.

"I think you're always hoping that the club would, or the players would, respond and that the two week international break would bring some sort of freshness - but it looked like they had the world on their shoulders.

"Their performance levels over the last few weeks have dipped, and when a manager can't get a performance out of his players and the results are getting as bad as they are then in this game you're going to lose your job."

Following yesterday's defeat, Man Utd sit a whopping 12 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea in the table - despite having spent big in the summer to sign Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick's first game in charge will be Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League meeting with Villarreal.
