GERRARD RUMBLINGS

The Sun reckon that Chelsea are lining up a '£30 million summer swoop' whilst the Mirror believe that Arsenal will also be in for the player's signature.

Meanwhile Benitez is confident Gerrard will not be leaving: "I don’t think we will have difficulty keeping Steven. He is happy here."

Liverpool CEO Rick Parry said: "We can’t guarantee any player will stay in this day and age. We were all pleased Steven committed his future to the club by signing a new contract, but certainly not complacent about the future in the present climate. What Stevie craves is success on the pitch, like we all do. If we win silverware we will keep our best players. Other clubs can keep knocking on the door but it will not be opening, that’s for sure."

All this is apparently linked to rumours that David Moores may be on the verge of quitting. Gerrard has cited Moores as one of the reasons he decided to sign a new contract and stay on when many thought he would leave last summer.

"I don't think you'll find another club where the players and chairman have such a special relationship," revealed Gerrard. "I've no wish to get involved in the politics or financial situation at the club but I can speak personally about how the players feel about David Moores. He was one of the main reasons I stayed at Liverpool. When I was having problems during the summer it was the chairman who was ringing me up all the time, reassuring me and doing everything possible to keep me here. He was in my thoughts when I reached my decision to stay."
