GIGGS SETS HIS SIGHTS HIGH

From the MEN:

Ryan Giggs has flown out of the goalscoring trap this season and is on course to beat his best ever campaign tally for Manchester United.

The Welshman's brace against Olympiakos on Tuesday night took him to six strikes in 13 matches. Now he has his 1993-94 haul of 17 goals in his sights.

"I'd like to think I could achieve something like that again.

"I am enjoying this scoring spell. My aim is to carry it on. I've had a bit of luck along the way obviously when you consider my second against Olympiakos, which I am claiming!

"The manager has given me a bit of license to come off the wing and get in among our front men. He lets me play just behind them.

"It's a role I enjoy and it has certainly been getting me into the right places for having a strike at goal.

"It is important the likes of myself contribute to our tally to help the forwards. At United we have always had a good back-up to our main goalscorers from midfield.

"There are goals in midfield from the likes of myself, Paul Scholes and David Beckham. We know we create chances and we know we can score.

"We have produced our best football in the Champions League this season so far. It is coming together now as well in the Premiership.

"But we have to carry it on and keep the run going. We are playing some good football and getting better and stronger. We are looking more dangerous now."

Meanwhile his national boss Mark Hughes says:

"Ryan is a wonderful player for both club and country and I want to see him play in the finals of an international tournament. His talent deserves that stage.

"He's a very ambitious young man and I am sure the European Championships is a great motivation for him. It is going to spur him.

"But despite the fact he's won everything there is to win at club level his ambitions for United don't lessen. He's a very strong individual and wants to keep winning and winning.

"Our goal for Wales is to do what no other group of Welsh players has done and play in the European Championship finals and Ryan is going to be a big influence on that.

"His influence at Old Trafford is enormous and at 29 he's in that period of his career where he knows exactly how he can inspire and cause problems for the opposition. He'll continue to be a big player for Wales and United for many years.

"He's been great for me for Wales. He had a hand in both our goals in Helsinki. It's a bonus for both myself and United to see him flying. There is no finer sight in football.

"Ryan has never been judged on his goals because there is a heck more to him as a player but it's great to see him have six to his credit already. He agrees that finishing has not been his strongest point. However, with his pace and ability he is always going to find himself in scoring position."
