GILL – WE'RE NOT FINISHED IN THE TRANSFER MARKET

See that? Robben/Robbing. Genius. Anyway, David Gill had
this reassuring message for United fans worried that we’re
losing out on all our main targets in the transfer market:

“Arjen Robben would have liked to come to us. We went back
with a revised but very significant offer for a 19-year-old
who has great potential. We thought it was a sensible offer
because the transfer market has changed but unfortunately it
wasn't enough for PSV.

“It doesn't mean we can't compete in the transfer market
because we can and we always will - but we will compete on
our terms. The mega-mega deals just aren't there anymore. If
you exclude Chelsea there were only five transfers in the
whole of last year in excess of £10million.

“Clearly Chelsea don't feel they are paying too much money
for their players. We might think that but it is not our
problem. We don’t look at it like that. We don’t say,
‘That’s a windfall, let’s spend it’.

“What we do as a club is to assess as a board, and with the
manager, whether a player is worth chasing. We aren’t going
to chase a player above what we think is reasonable.

"Manchester United has a long-established reputation for
creating a mixture of experienced players, young players
with potential and youngsters from the academy.

“Nothing gives the manager, the scouts and people associated
with the club more pleasure than seeing a young player come
through and from my perspective it is cheaper, so we are
very happy with that.”

Looking at the performance on the pitch this season, Gill
said:

“'Arsenal are a great team but we have won the Premiership
eight times in 11 seasons, which is a record to be proud of.
The beauty of the Premier League is that it is such a
vibrant competition. That is why it can do great TV deals
domestically and overseas.

“Of course we would prefer to be lifting the trophy this
season but you can't afford to look back. We have to look
forwards and say `what are we going to do to get it back
next year'.

“Every time Arsenal have won the Premiership, we have got it
back the following season. Hopefully we will do it again.”
