GILL PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE

“It is a strong financial performance during quite a
difficult period for us on and off the pitch. We have
demonstrated that we are delivering on our business goals,”
Gill told Radio 4's Today programme.

“It is very easy to put that slight dip down to one
particular factor. But it is dangerous to say that when
there were a number of issues which perhaps caused that.”

Speaking about the Rio Ferdinand case he said, “The club and
player regret the fact that this occurred. We feel
disappointed, and I known Rio does too. But we have to put
it behind us.”

Gill also defended the decision not to replace Rio during
the January transfer window:

“As with a lot of decisions, in hindsight you might take
them differently. But our priority at that stage was
acquiring a centre-forward, and we now have a very good one
in Louis Saha.

“I don’t believe it was a mistake not to replace him. That
decision was taken at the time and we believed the priority
was a new striker, so we bought Saha.

“We were not to know Mikael Silvestre would get injured or
Gary Neville would be suspended for four games.

“The Rio situation will not happen again and I think
everyone involved has learnt their lessons.”

Gill also reiterated his support for Fergie, and the new
contract signed earlier this year:

“He and we are delighted with that arrangement. It is in the
best interests of everyone. The rolling contract reflects
the fact that he has been here for many years. It takes away
this issue of when he is going to retire and who is going to
replace him.”
