From The Guardian:

'Robson, is understood to have agreed a two-year contract, worth £1.25m, to manage the club where he began his playing career in the 70s. He went on to become the key figure in the attractive West Brom side put together by Ron Atkinson.

Atkinson made him one of his first signings when he moved to Manchester United, paying £1.5m for Remi Moses and Robson, and has had a say in his return to The Hawthorns as manager.

He was one of several figures consulted by Jeremy Peace as the West Bromwich chairman worked through a list of candidates including Glenn Hoddle and Gordon Strachan. Robson, who was interviewed last week, found himself at the top of the list after Hoddle and Strachan ruled themselves out.

… though West Brom fans will welcome the return of Robson for sentimental reasons, his appointment is something of a gamble. The odds were stacked against him at Bradford City, who were second from bottom of the First Division when he was appointed manager in November last year, and they went down. But doubts about his capabilities arose in the latter part of his seven-year spell at Middlesbrough. Backed by the chairman Steve Gibson's millions, he revived the Teesside club and led them to the First Division title in 1995 in his first season. Three losing cup final appearances followed, but so did relegation in 1998.

Robson again returned them to the Premiership at the first attempt, but had to enlist the services of the former England coach Terry Venables to help him stave off relegation soon afterwards. Now he faces another battle against relegation, beginning on Sunday with the visit of Middlesbrough.'
