Mickey Thomas says that United could do worse than appoint Mark Hughes as Fergie’s successor.

"He's become one of the hottest managerial names in football and I see him in charge at United one day. He spent 10 years at Old Trafford, was one of their greatest players and is still an idol with the fans. Mark has shown what he can do as a manager, leading Wales to that fantastic victory over Italy. They are now unbeaten for seven games and that kind of record means that a lot of clubs would be keen to take him. If he can take Wales all the way to the European Championship finals, then he could virtually name his club."

The Shevchenko rumours continue to bubble under, The Mirror says that Fergie is trying to sign Deportivo La Coruna’s Diego Tristan on loan and apparently United are ready to do battle with Arsenal for the services of Middlesbrough’s Mark Shwarzer come January. In the absence of anything new from United officially the Sunday People takes the step of quoting An unnamed ‘United source’:

"We need a striker desperately with Diego Forlan struggling. He's played 31 games now and still only has one penalty to show for it.

"We've had all kinds of strikers offered to us but none of the ones we've looked at are qualified to play for us in the Champions League after Christmas ... except Shevchenko."

What Fergie DID say on Friday was: "We did make a move for a striker but it didn't materialise [as you will have read in red Issue already]. We tried very hard to get a defender too, the boy from Rennes, Julien Escude, and Nicolas Burdisso from Boca Juniors - but they weren't to be. That clearly stated how much we wanted to add to the squad."

Gordon Hill has been appointed as the new manager at Hyde United depiste a run of three defeats since he took over temporary charge ten days ago. Hill has previously managed at Northwich Victoria and Chester City. Hyde’s next game is a Unibond League Cup match this Thursday 24th October against the mighty Trafford.
