'GOT TO DO BETTER'

Ferguson:

"Real Madrid have won the European Cup nine times, but we have only managed it twice and that isn't enough for a club of Manchester United's stature. We know that we should have done better in this competition.

"But due to the tribalism of English football, we are not allowed to lose to anybody in the Premiership, so my attitude is to go out and try and win both the Premiership and the Champions League.

"We are not over-confident going into the Debrecen game, though, because we know that we still have a job to do.

"Wes Brown and Gabriel Heinze will probably play at the back, while Smith will be given a centre midfield role. Someone will have to replace Roy eventually. We have always had an ability to manage situations like this before, such as when Roy took over from Bryan Robson. It is part of the history of our club. Alan has great character, he is a great personality and a very committed player. Most of all, he is very enthusiastic to play in the position. He is relishing the challenge, so we are giving him an opportunity to see what he does.

"We will try to attack, but with one eye on defence. We will do everything to win the game.

"The surface is actually in better condition than it was three years ago," he said.

"The rain has helped and I don't anticipate changing my team because of it.

"I have never been complacent in my life and I don't intend to start now.

"They are a good side and we have to be sensible about how we go about things."

Neville:

"We have slipped a noose round our own necks by consistently saying we have to win the Champions League because we have not won it since 1999.

"What we should be doing this season is concentrating on the Premiership. We need to enjoy Europe just as wedo the FA Cup.

"We have done well in the FA Cup so hopefully we will do well in Europe as well."
