HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY TALK

MANCHESTER UNITED'S players dedicated their Carling Cup triumph to injured teammate Alan Smith in an emotional show of solidarity at the final whistle.

They all donned T-shirts with the words For you Smudger written across the front to send best wishes to Smith, who broke a leg and dislocated an ankle last week.

It was an echo of their Jimmy Davis tribute at the FA Cup final two years ago after the promising United youngster had been killed in a car crash.

Skipper Neville said: "We were devastated last week because of what happened to Alan. He can't be here today but this victory is for him."

Ferdinand said: "It's a great day for us but also for Smudge. Hopefully he will come back fit and well. We'll all be happy with that."

The United players looked genuinely chuffed to win a cup that had often been dismissed by the Old Trafford hierarchy over the years.

Ferdinand added: "It's a fantastic feeling. I've lost two finals before and it's hard to take, it brings tears to your eyes and it takes a lot of time to get over. Now I've got a winners' medal and I want to add to that."

It was not a day of total unity, with a show of dissent from United fans unhappy with the new owners.

A banner reading "Glazers - we are forever in your debt" was unfurled in front of three of the brothers of the family who bought the club.
