Harry Maguire likely to miss 'a few weeks' with calf injury

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Harry Maguire's calf injury could rule him out for "a few weeks", but Luke Shaw will not need long to recover from the hip problem he picked up against Aston Villa.

Shaw limped off late in the first half of the 1-0 defeat and was soon joined on the sidelines by Maguire, who pulled up and was eventually forced off with just over 20 minutes to go. Both sat and watched on as Kortney Hause headed home a late winner.

It was a huge double blow for United, who are preparing themselves for a repeat of last season's Europa League final against Villarreal - this time in the Champions League.

In the build-up to the game, Solskjaer has confirmed that Maguire will be absent, but he remains
cautiously optimistic that Shaw could play a part.

"Luke has been in today so I’ll give him a chance to be involved, he didn’t train with the team," Solskjaer said (via the Manchester Evening News). "Harry is more or less definitely out, it doesn’t look good. It's his calf, that might take a few weeks.

"Let's see how quickly he recovers. He wanted to play against Villarreal, he missed the last game. We will have to make a few changes."

With Shaw unlikely to start the game, Alex Telles could be given just his second appearance of the season after shaking off an ankle injury, particularly as Diogo Dalot is expected to start ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

At centre-back, Raphael Varane is set to be joined by Victor Lindelof, who replaced Maguire against Villa after playing 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham.

With Maguire set for a spell on the sidelines, he's likely to miss the upcoming Premier League game with Everton, while his place in the England squad for the upcoming international break could also be in jeopardy.

After the break, United return to league action against Leicester on 16 October, and then face Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City over the following three weeks.
