HATCHETS AND HAMMERS

King Kev:

"I'd love it if we beat them"

Seriously, Kev employs some mind games of his own:

"The onus is on United to come forward and maybe we could benefit from that,

"They have lost once in 15 games, some of which have been against top-class opposition, both in the Premiership and the Champions' League.

"The crisis at Man Utd is being nine points off the top of the league; our inconsistency comes down to the fact we can't win two games on the trot. Nevertheless, if they have aspirations of winning the title, they have to win.

"On our day we can give anyone a game.

"The problems come when we have to start carrying players. That is when we struggle.

"But the players should recognise tomorrow's game as a chance to put their name in the history books.

"Old Trafford is an intimidating place to go but I would like to think they will be excited about the opportunity of playing there.

"And don't forget, we are only four points behind them, so the gap is not quite as big as some people would have us believe. They are still a quality side but if we get a result we will be right on their coat tails.

"What happened against Arsenal has nothing to do with us.

"Since I have been at City all the derby matches have been well contested and fair.

"I know Gary Neville got sent off last year but everyone accepts what he did was completely out of character.

"There has always been the odd challenge that has been near the mark and there is usually something pretty spicy but you expect that and I don't think you can compare it with Arsenal.

"This is a local derby, there will be a lot of passion and we both want to win.

"But we both know there is a way of winning and that is what we will both try to do.

"We have a few players missing, but I think the spirit is good."

"I am aware that City haven't won at Old Trafford for 30 years, because people keep telling me about it. but football is such a fascinating game because records are there to be broken."

"We have got to do it some time, so why not this week?"

Fergie:

"The crowd have been fantastic recently.

"They have been really vocal and really got behind the team. Hopefully, they will maintain that tomorrow. I expect them to because they can have a great input into how the team performs.

"The disappointment last week was that we had 18 chances and didn't score. We cannot accept that because the players are better than that.

"We know the goals are there. It is not as if we have players who are incapable of scoring.

"But we are not turning some of our more productive play into goals and that is a worry because we are now into November and we need to start scoring.

More specifically on the match with The Liars:

"Wright-Phillips is very quick and has now got himself into the England squad.

"He scored twice against us last season, so we will have to make sure we keep him quiet this time.

"We know the adrenalin will be pumping on both sides, so we need to keep our concentration levels high.

"Derby games can be nervous, tense affairs and we have to expect that. But we have an excellent home record against City during my time here and we must maintain that.

"We have to go on a winning run - that is the most important factor of all."

Keano:

"At home we fancy our chances against most teams. The way they play, they will come and have a go.

"Kevin Keegan's a manager I have a lot of time for, they have one or two decent young players coming through so they will come and enjoy the occasion and we'll look forward to it as much as the City players will look forward to it."
