Police made one arrest last night after a mobile phone appeared to be launched from Liverpool’s Kop as a missile against Wayne Rooney.

The incident occurred just after the former Everton striker had scored the only goal of the game and ran toward the home fans to celebrate with a seemingly inflammatory gesture, cupping his ears, having silenced the supporters who had jeered his every touch earlier in the game.

It was confirmed by Merseyside Police last night that several Liverpool fans had given statements of complaint about Rooney to police inside the ground and that: "We are investigating the incident."

Merseyside Police said the man who had been arrested had been detained in connection with a throwing incident, but could not confirm whether he had thrown the phone.

The spokesman said: "We have recovered a mobile phone from the pitch. We are not sure whether it was thrown at anybody. We are making inquiries.

"One person has been arrested for a throwing incident but I am not sure whether it was connected."
