HOW DID IT COME TO THIS?

Ted Beckham in the NOTW:

"I haven't told him how I feel. He has had enough pressure on him, enough aggravation. But football was my life, his football was my life and once you have it you don't want to lose it. We went everywhere together.

" We were more than father and son. We were best mates, but it isn't like that any more. That is tough for me.

"It will be even worse now he has gone to Madrid. My biggest fear is that is all over for us.

"I am not a rich man, I don't have thousands in the bank, I still have to work and I can't afford to fly over to Madrid every week. When he was at Manchester United I could pop in the car and drive up the road. I can't do that now.

"We are a normal family. The pressure has been gradual over the years and it put a lot of strain on us.

"The pressure may have been one of the reasons for me and David's mum splitting. Certainly it didn't help. We remain friends, at the end of the day you can't spend that much time together, go to all the football together and not have feelings.

"We have worked together, Sandra has looked after him as a person, I have helped him with his footballing side and we will never lose that. We are football fanatics.

"It was difficult when we told David. It is difficult for any family when two parents split up and it was no different for David.

"David and Victoria do spend more time with Victoria's parents than us. Definitely.

"I don't think that is anything sinister, it is more of a girl thing. Girls are close to their mum and Victoria is like that."
