Sir Alex Ferguson as a known admirer but is thought to have previously been put off by an asking price in excess of ?15million. Now, though, Lloris has urged the United boss to reconsider.

'Manchester United is a great football club,' the 24-year-old said in the French press. 'They are one of the most successful clubs in the world, so, of course, Manchester is one of the clubs that make me dream.'

Lloris' manager at international level is Laurent Blanc, the former United defender, while the Red Devils have a good recent history with French keepers, having won two league titles with Fabian Barthez between the sticks.

Current Old Trafford No 1 Van der Sar is set to hang up his gloves at the end of the current campaign after six years service.
