The mystery man at the top of Manchester United's list of suspects denies he is the Bootgate mole. Steve 'Winky' Jacobs, an Arsenal talisman who travels with the team and is often in the dressing room, says the rumours fingering him are 'bullshit'.
There had been speculation that Ashley Cole had leaked news of the dressing-room bust-up but this was dismissed by Cole's agent. A club spokesman said: 'We are not pointing the finger at anyone,' but a senior source at Old Trafford confirmed that Jacobs's was the name most mentioned. Last Wednesday United were reported to have conducted 'a mole hunt inside Old Trafford' that concluded the leak came from Arsenal.
'Bullshit. How would it be me? The first I or anyone else at the club heard about it was on the Monday when the story came out. Have you ever been at the changing rooms there? There must be 80 metres between them.'
Jacobs said someone at Old Trafford must have leaked the story. 'We couldn't give a monkey's, but it obviously came from Manchester United and it made [Sir Alex] Ferguson look like an idiot.'
