IS RUUD FOR REAL?

Fergie:

"There is a possibility that Ruud will go. There have been bits of interest in him, but no one has yet reached our asking price.

"Andriy Shevchenko went to Chelsea for £30million. He's a similar age to Ruud and their records in Europe are almost identical, so you can absolutely guarantee that we're not going to give Ruud away."

The Indie:

The Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy is expected to complete his move to Real Madrid today after the clubs settled on a fee considerably lower than United's original £16m asking price.

The two clubs are believed to have agreed a final fee of about €15m (£10.3m) for the 30-year-old Dutchman and he is due sign a three-year deal today, subject to a medical.

The player will be presented to fans later in the week before joining up with his new team-mates at their pre-season training camp in Irdning, Austria, at the start of next week. Real's need to bring in a new striker became obvious on Friday when their Brazil centre-forward Ronaldo confirmed that he needed an operation that would almost certainly rule him out of the start of the season.

The Sun:

Real Madrid expect to announce today the £12million capture of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill was locked in talks with Real director Pedrag Mijatovic last night to seal the deal.

The news came as boss Alex Ferguson insisted Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at United — and see off the boo-boys.

Fergie wanted £16m for Van Nistelrooy, 30, who has scored a phenomenal 150 goals in five years at United.

But Fergie — who is on a pre-season tour with an under-strength squad in South Africa — told Gill to drop the fee in order to push through the transfer.

The Times:

Van Nistelrooy requested a transfer days before the FA Cup Final against Arsenal in May 2005. Ferguson persuaded him to stay and even considered making him captain when Roy Keane left the club, but their relationship never recovered and soured in the closing weeks of last season. The Holland forward is close to joining Real — even if Ferguson hinted at differences over a fee, giving warning that "we won't give him away" — but Ronaldo's dreams of following Van Nistelrooy to Madrid will remain just that if Ferguson has his way.
