IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A NICER MAN

From Sky Sports:

Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has his career in the balance after reportedly failing a drugs test for cocaine carried out by his club.

From The Mirror:

Mark Bosnich was at the centre of a drug riddle last night amid claims that he failed a test for cocaine carried out by the club.

The former Manchester United keeper is reported to be sweating on the outcome of a second test which, if positive, would almost certainly result in him becoming the Premiership's first high-profile cocaine casualty.

However, although the FA were reluctant to make any official statement about the reported test, it appears that if Chelsea have tested their own players for drug abuse it is against the rules of the game.

The FA have their own drug testing unit and FIFA rules state clubs are not authorised to carry out their own testing.

It has been reported that Chelsea have yet to inform the FA of their findings or handed over documentation relating to the drug test.

But an insider at the FA said that even if Chelsea had carried out a test, the FA would not investigate the outcome because it would not recognise the club's right to perform one.

"If a test has been done by an individual club it is a breach of the football regulations and will not be deemed legal," added the insider.

Chelsea were unavailable for comment, although chief executive Trevor Birch reportedly claimed any internal dispute was a matter between the club and the FA.
