We understand that the Chelsea manager had written Christmas cards to every one of his Premiership counterparts but in the one he sent to Wenger, Mourinho had included a personal message.
Knowing that the Arsenal manager had been deeply offended by his allegation that he was "a voyeur", Mourinho wrote that he hoped Wenger understood that it was not meant personally and trusted that he had not been hurt by it.
Before kick-off at Highbury a member of Arsenal's backroom staff approached one of Mourinho's assistants and asked if the message had been written personally by the Chelsea manager or simply written on his behalf.
At Stamford Bridge, Mourinho makes a point of welcoming his counterpart to the stadium and went down to the touchline well before the start to wait for Wenger. The Arsenal manager walked straight past him.
